Background: The All Sports Association was founded in 1957 by a group that stepped up to save the All College Basketball Tournament, which began in 1936 and holds the title as the nation's oldest basketball tournament. The All Sports Association has expanded the scope of its operations until now it sponsors a wide range of events, including the Sooner State Games, the 2006 NCAA Wrestling Championships and the softball College World Series.
A large group of unpaid volunteers make up the organization, including 41 noncompensated board members and more than 400 community volunteers. Still, the All College Basketball Tournament, now known as the All College Classic, is the cornerstone of the organization's purpose. This year's All-College dates have been moved from the week after Christmas to Dec. 22 to gain more attractive television dates and move out of the shadow of the college football bowl season.
"The event has moved from a 32-team format to a four-team tournament that was slowly dying to a nationally televised two-game classic that features OU and OSU annually playing nationally known opponents, said Tim Brassfield, executive director.Archive ID: 2450880
