Wilshire Garden Market began with a mom and daughter's quest for a metal watering can to accent their garden. Christy White and her mom, Carol McPheeters, searched all over Oklahoma City in the mid-1990s and all they could find were plastic watering cans. Inspired by discovering an untapped niche market, the duo opened their own garden store in 1997.

Before bringing an item into the store, the women make sure it's something they'd put in their own gardens and that it will withstand the weather in Oklahoma, White said. They carry pots, fountains, bird baths, outdoor rugs and pillows and some furniture.

Customers who visit the store see it as more than just a place to shop.

“They say they wish they could have coffee in the morning and wine in the evening on our Wisteria-covered patio,” McPheeters says.

The store's owners gather inspiration from visiting public and private gardens when they travel and incorporating ideas they see into the store. White said the store's specialty is “helping people make their outdoor spaces more livable and beautiful.”
