Mahan, in his fifth year on the PGA Tour, is off to a rough start in 2008. He's missed six cuts in 15 stroke play events and has finished in the top 10 only once. Mahan shot a one-over 72 on Thursday, putting him in a tie for 19th at the U.S. Open.
"I have played a lot better in some areas, you just can't tell,” Mahan said after practicing for the U.S. Open on Wednesday at Torrey Pines. "I haven't been too pleased with how I've played so far.”
But last season, Mahan saved his best golf for the summer. In the three months following the U.S. Open at Oakmont — where he finished tied for 13th — Mahan won for the first time at the Travelers Championship, was a captains selection for the President's Cup and shot three rounds of 62. In February of 2007, he was 232nd in the world golf rankings. He finished the year at 36th.
"He went crazy after the U.S. Open,” said Mahan's caddie, John Wood, who's been with Mahan for three years.
