What's cool for back-to-school fashion?
We're answering that question this week and next, taking a look first at what many grade school and middle school students will be wearing when they make their way back to the classroom or, since this is still just August, when temperatures cool.
For boys, it's all about colored jeans, stripes, denim and layering. Preppy and Ivy League looks are making a comeback.
Girls will find plenty of choices with printed leggings and jeans, retro prints, bows, fake fur, denim, ruffles, oversized tops, vivid color, dots, stripes and Aztec patterns.
Lessons in denim and layering
Colored denim in shades of red, green and mustard get high marks this season, along with anything in Thunder blue, said Carolyn Goldman, owner of Uptown Kids at Classen Curve. And don't forget to layer on the tops. Jude wears Mayoral skinny pants, striped T-shirt, chambray shirt with elbow patches and Toms shoes from Uptown Kids.
Jewel tones, colored skinny jeans, faux fur vests, ruffles and Bohemian styles allow for plenty of mixing and matching and having fun. Kaidence wears Mimi & Maggie long-sleeve T-shirt and sweater with Mayoral jeans, Yosi Samra ballet flats and a fun hair accessory from Uptown Kids.
Aztec prints are a big trend this fall, along with printed leggings and jeans, scarves and purple, said Kelly Smith, owner of Keedo Clothes. Lainey wears Ragdoll & Rockets Aztec print top with lace-up leggings, Minnetonka fringe boots and carries a Vera Bradley puffy messenger bag from Keedo Clothes.
Stripes and prints, many with a nod to the past, have a bright future this season. Hayden wears Jelly the Pug retro floral hooded top and printed pants with ruffle detail from Keedo Clothes.
Fresh take on cool
Nothing says cool like a leather-look jacket. Sleeves are pushed up for a little attitude. Joe Fresh Kids jacket, T-shirt and jeans from JC Penney.
