They said it about Sam Bradford:

Tim Griffin, ESPN.com:
"How about consecutive weeks of five TD passing games? Most striking of all, Bradford is averaging 10.9 yards per attempt and has thrown 12 TDs with two interceptions.”

Chris Huston, Heismanpundit.com:
"He's off to maybe the greatest start for a passer in college football history ... but all things being equal, voters will favor Chase Daniel in this race. They will always choose the senior, established quarterback when given the choice. The two won't play each other potentially until the Big 12 title game, and by then, Daniel may have it wrapped up.”

Yep, the race for the Heisman sure is intense.

Thing is, this election is different than that other one captivating the nation. The campaign that culminates on a December evening in New York has an incumbent.

Tim Tebow won the Heisman Trophy last year as a sophomore.

Does that give the Florida quarterback an advantage?

No doubt he is one of the favorites, but he is hardly the only candidate. Local product Sam Bradford is in the mix. So are Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel, Southern Cal quarterback Mark Sanchez and Georgia running back Knowshon Moreno.

But really, do they have a chance? Does Bradford have a legitimate campaign? Is the Oklahoma quarterback electable?

Will his performances have an impact when Heisman voters cast their ballots?

Or are he and everyone else just fighting for second behind Tebow?

Turns out, incumbency isn't such a good thing when it comes to the Heisman.

Advantage, Bradford.

"He has an excellent shot,” SI.com senior writer Stewart Mandel said, adding that Bradford has name recognition and national exposure going for him, too. "And more importantly, he's putting up huge numbers for the No. 2 team in the country.”

Hard to argue that.

Bradford has thrown for 882 yards with 12 touchdown and only two interceptions in the Sooners' first three games. His passing efficiency rating is off the charts at 214.4, second only to Tulsa quarterback David Johnson's outrageous 241.6.

Slingin' Sam has a serious shot at the Heisman.

No doubt it's early in the season. A couple weeks into the season a year ago, Bradford looked pretty good, too.

Then came Colorado and Iowa State and Texas Tech.

But already, Bradford looks more comfortable and more refined than he was last season.

Important primaries remain for all the other candidates in this election. The second Saturday in October is shaping up to be an important one. Bradford faces Texas, Tebow plays LSU and Southern Cal's Sanchez takes on Arizona State.

Call it Super Saturday.

Daniel will have his first big test the following weekend when Missouri goes to Texas.

Performing well on those big stages will be important in swaying voters.

No one has more big-time, high-stakes games than Tebow, and as it turns out, no one needs them more in the Heisman campaign.

"Strange as it sounds, Tebow's incumbency probably works against him,” Mandel said.

"He's already set the bar so high that the only way he would measure up to peoples' expectations is to exceed what he did last year.”

What Tebow did a year ago was darn impressive.

His passing stats: 3,286 yards, 32 touchdowns.

His rushing stats: 895 yards, 23 touchdowns.

Consider this — only 26 teams in Division-I football scored more touchdowns than Tebow did last season.

That kind of performance will be tough to top.

Chris Huston suspects Tebow is fighting an unwinnable uphill battle.

For years, he worked as an assistant sports information director at Southern Cal, where he directed successful Heisman campaigns for Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart.

A few years ago, he started sharing his expertise on his Web site heismanpundit.com.

"As with any product or politician, the freshness of a player's brand only lasts so long,” Huston said, "and then the natural inclination is to try to poke holes in it.”

So it is with the Gator in Gainesville. Fair or not, voters will be judging Tebow 2008 against Tebow 2007, and the early exit polls on this year's version are not good.

He has plummeted in the Heisman straw polls after gaining less than 500 yards and scoring only three touchdowns in his first two games.

Winning the Heisman even once is difficult, but Huston believes that the process is set up to make a repeat difficult if not impossible.

"So if Tebow does win again,” Huston said of the player who was the first sophomore to win the Heisman, "he would once again be defying all college football history and logic.”

This sure doesn't feel like Tebow's Heisman to lose

"It's more like everyone else's to lose,” Mandel said. "It seems like people are more fixated on the other candidates right now.”

None is hotter than Bradford.

He has rocketed up Heisman polls, going from an others-receiving-votes candidate in the preseason to a top vote-getter after three weeks. He even tops CBSSports.com's rankings.

So, who will win this election? Will it be the incumbent Tebow?

Will it be the candidate who missed out last time, Daniel?

Or will it be one of the "change” candidates, Bradford or Sanchez or some other fresh face?

The campaign has only just begun.

This one, as they say in politics, is too close to call.

just what has sanchez from usc done. his numbers are sub par at best. there's 35 qb's out there with better numbers. after all, that's what the heisman is all about, the best player , not the best team.

I dont see anything wrong with this story or the DOK publishing something positive about OU. I mean, it is the major daily newspaper for the city and OU is a perinneal top 5 powerhouse; so there are most likely going to be numerous positive stories about OU and it's players here. I also liked the tone of the story, after all, it is election season and it was a somewhat clever idea to tie the heisman with the presidential election. Teebow is the incumbent heisman and he has 2 more years before he's out. So, you will hear about him as a heisman hopeful again next year - because he is a good player; even if he didn't win last year. Bradford, he's the best quarterback in my (and most people's) opinion and he plays for a top team in the nation - so, he's going to have the most exposure (tied with USC's guy) and as long as OU wins, Bradford should win it with flying colours. As for Chase, good player but very cocky personality which will ensure he will be forth runnerup!

Two things I hate... DOK writes who think they're being clever (you aren't...the election thing was fine for the first 2 sentences, but all of the other metaphores were garbage and made me want to puke), and Chase Daniel (who is not a man and his greatness is just not true)...
Jason, Norman - Sep 19, 2008 at 3:11 pm
Matt, I agree with you. In fact, if he is invited to New York it will be because he won last year. I don't think his numbers will compare with the top 5 quarterbacks. No slam on him, just not his game and the quarterback competition is much, much deeper this year.
eudell, Virginia Beach - Sep 19, 2008 at 2:55 pm
I think Tim Tebow will have a hard time repeating. He will have to be better than last year, and so far he hasnt been. I like Tebow though, he seems like a really solid kid from everything I have read and heard, so I cheer him on. Hard to ignore Daniel's numbers, but I just dont like him, seen him throw one to many tantrums and eat one to many boogers. For Bradford its all about winning. If they go undefeated he will be right in the mix. Sanchez will have to shine every week because of the weaker opponents.

The speculation is fine as long as Bradford doesn't start reading them. Something tells me he won't. Bradford's almost perfect but I was trying to think what quarterback he reminded me of and all could come up with is Ken Dorsey. Old Miami quarterback.
eudell, Virginia Beach - Sep 19, 2008 at 11:12 am
I certainly agree it's awfully early for Heisman talk but we all know this happens every year. And it's not just the DOK. EVERY major publication; newspapers and magazines, are talking up Bradford and rightfully so. If OU doesn't stumble and in fact plays for the NC, he will win it. Can't deny that. And I agree with you Billy, if folks don't like the DOK online, then don't read it or maybe they just got to have something to bitch about. I thought this was good article but I guess I'm an idiot according to these other jokers.
Dingle, Berry - Sep 19, 2008 at 8:32 am
You idiots are critical of the DOK and then show the USA that you are reading it everyday!!!! If you read a story and don't like it, it's bad reporting. If you like the story its great. Goodness gracious People, get a life!!!!!!!
Billy, Morris - Sep 19, 2008 at 8:07 am
Why are all the local sports columnists either overzealous groupies or unfit critics? Is it against the law for the Oklahoman or Transcript to hire a real journalist for their sports department? A high school "journalist" could produce at least as good of stories as we see out of the "professionals". Can't you give us more than silly speculation? Can't you get beyond your laziness to provide real stories? Nobody is ever going to confuse any of these local sports reporters for Sally Jenkins or any of the legitimate sports journalists in this country.

You know Jess that's what newspapers do, they print headlines. They speculate. They even try to sell newspapers. Of course one of the fun things about college football is the speculation. We have three teams in Oklhoma that at least have a shot at the national championship. We have three quarterbacks who at least have a shot at the national honours. Enjoy it while we can. Of course James is right David Johnson and Tulsa are lower on both lists because they are not in a BCS conference. But they both still have a shot now. Is that fair, no. Is there anything we can do about it, no. So what can we do. Enjoy college football. Speculate! ! ! Speculate! ! ! Speculate! ! !

Why is David johnson not a candidate? What kind of numbers would a player, not just QB, from a non BCS school have to have to be considered? It seems that there are 3 divisions in college football these days. BCS, Non-BCS and BCS sub division.
James, Haywood - Sep 19, 2008 at 3:25 am
Could we give this team a chance to actually play some teams in the Big 12 and maintain their status... or at least till the BCS comes out?!? The DOK is ready to start printing headlines, Bradford wins Heisman, OU wins national championship. Print articles about what the team is doing and its current success, but stop all the speculation! Let the season play out some.
