A man accused of killing his mother and shooting her husband multiple times at their mobile home near Luther in May will stand trial, a judge ruled Wednesday.
Matthew Scott Strickland, 24, is charged with first-degree murder in Oklahoma County District Court. A second charge was amended to assault and battery with a deadly weapon, and a third charge — wearing body armor during the commission of a felony — was sought by prosecutors and accepted by the judge during Wednesday's preliminary hearing.
Strickland is accused of shooting Jill and Ottie Sides on the afternoon of May 2. Jill Sides, 46, died at the scene, and Ottie Sides suffered five gunshot wounds, he said Wednesday.
Ottie Sides testified Wednesday that he and his wife were standing in the doorway of their home holding matching .380 semi-automatic pistols and speaking with Strickland when he pulled a handgun and began firing at them.
“‘You're not the only ones who can carry concealed,'” Sides testified Strickland said before shooting.
Sides choked back tears when describing what he saw when the gunfire stopped.
“I looked down and she was laying there. She was trying to breathe and blood was coming out of the back of her head, so I knew she'd been shot,” he said.
