Ryan Farris saw a half-naked woman crying for help and a man bolting in the opposite direction. He said what happened next was all instinct.
About 2 a.m. Saturday in a Bricktown alley a block northeast of The Mantel Wine Bar & Bistro, Farris and a friend were walking home when a woman appeared from behind a trash container. With torn underwear, no shoes and a top that was falling off, she told Farris she had just been raped, he said. Seconds later, Farris said, a man emerged from the shadows.
“I just put two and two together,” said Farris, a 30-year-old Oklahoma City resident.
The man ran and Farris followed — shouting to fellow last-call bar patrons to stop the man he believed to have just assaulted the woman. Then the man sprinted past the Wormy Dog Saloon, where Farris had just attended a concert. A patrol car was stationed out front.
“We couldn’t get anyone to stop him,” Farris said. “I had to really scream at the cops to help us.”
The foot chase continued near Deep Deuce. That’s when Farris said he and a group of about four others who joined his cause lost the man.
But not for long, as six patrol cars pulled into the area.
Police said Juan Beltran, 35, was found walking westbound on NE 4 near Oklahoma Avenue. Beltran was taken into police custody and booked into Oklahoma County jail on complaints of attempted rape and assault and battery. He was being held Monday in lieu of $25,500 bail. The victim was taken to an area hospital.
