Man dies after Lake Hefner bicycling collision

A man involved in a collision with two members of a bicycling team at Lake Hefner has died, police said.

Police said Bernard Montgomery "Monty" Maughan, 67, was bicycling west at the Lake Hefner Dam about 7 p.m. Tuesday when he collided with two of four bicyclists traveling east.

Lara O'Leary, spokeswoman for the Emergency Medical Services Authority, said a man was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Police said Maughan later died from his injuries.

Different names given

Members of the Oklahoma City Velo Racing club identified the man as Monty Maughan, of Oklahoma City, on the organization's Facebook page.

One of Maughan's sons, Bernard Maughan, wrote about his father's death on his page, saying, “My father was my big brother, my friend, my teacher and my hero. Most of all though, he was my Dad. Driven to provide for and better the lot of his family, he was loyal, steadfast, opinionated and true to his code. We'll miss you Dad.”
