An Oklahoma City man who was trying to move a loaded shotgun from his house to keep his grandchildren from playing with it was killed Monday morning when the gun went off accidentally.

Police were called about 7:45 a.m. to the 1100 block of SW 16. Investigators said the man was watching his grandchildren and didn't have a lockable case for his shotgun in the house, police Lt. David Dale said.

The man tried to put the shotgun in his trunk so his grandchildren wouldn't get hurt. While the man was putting the gun in his trunk, the trigger got caught on something and went off, shooting the man, Dale said.

The man died at the scene, Dale said. No one else was injured.

No names were released Monday.
