PRYOR — A Tahlequah man is dead after an officer-involved shooting Thursday morning in Pryor, about 150 miles northeast of Oklahoma City.
A Grand River Dam Authority officer spotted a car that was reported to be stolen about 9:30 a.m. and began a pursuit, according to a statement from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. The car stopped near Pryor, and Dustin Shirrel, 30, of Tahlequah, jumped out with a handgun and ran into a wooded area, according to the statement.
Officers from the authority, Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers and Mayes County deputies followed Shirrel for almost a mile, fired at and killed him, OSBI said. Authorities arrested the driver, Claudia Taylor, 32, on a complaint of possession of a stolen vehicle.
The Mayes County district attorney has asked that OSBI investigate the shooting. When the investigation is complete, the district attorney will determine whether the shooting was justified.
