A Norman man fell 30 feet from a building rooftop as Oklahoma City police tried to arrest him early Thursday.

Police received a call about 4 a.m. that a man was found sleeping inside Academy Sports & Outdoors, 7700 S Walker Ave., according to the incident report.

When they arrived on the scene, the man had scaled the fence and climbed on top of the store.

According to the report, police sent out a helicopter to help chase the man, who would not stop running from police. The man jumped over the edge of the building, holding onto the guttering.

An officer reached for the man, “and even grasped his hand for a brief moment before he started to fall to the ground,” the report states. The officer said he had no way to secure himself to the roof and “had to let the (man) fall.”

David Keith Winston, 43, was detained and taken to the hospital for multiple broken bones and internal injuries, police Capt. Dexter Nelson said.

Winston was released from police custody while in the hospital, where he was treated before being released into his mother's care.

Nelson said Winston has outstanding city warrants and a felony warrant from Georgia, but the Georgia officials did not wish to extradite him.

The police chief has decided the incident will be investigated by Internal Affairs, Nelson said.
