Police are investigating the shooting of a Muskogee man that happened near N 24 Street and Court Street on Monday.

About 5:30 a.m., Randy Smith, 50, was shot as he left his home in the 2400 block of Court Street, driving east in his pickup. A man fired several rounds into his pickup, and one round struck Smith in the back of the head, police reported.

After he was shot, Smith lost control of his pickup and crashed into a parked car in the driveway at 2314 Court. He was able to call 911 after the crash.

Smith was taken to a Tulsa-area hospital. He was in critical condition Monday, police spokesman Michael Mahan reported.

Smith told police that as he was leaving his house, a black man, about 6 feet tall, approached him and asked him for a cigarette. The man weighed about 180 pounds and wore dark-color pants and a dark-color hooded sweatshirt.

It is unknown if the man was the shooter, but police would like to talk to the man to see if he witnessed the shooting.
