Man pleads guilty to shooting Lawton officer

BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Published: June 13, 2014

LAWTON — A man accused of shooting a Lawton police officer last year has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to several felony charges.

Demetrius Miller avoided a jury trial Thursday by pleading guilty to multiple charges, including shooting with intent to kill. Prosecutors accused Miller of shooting and wounding Lawton Police Sgt. Eric Weatherly as police were investigating a suspected burglary.

According to a local newspaper, the 24-year-old Miller must serve more than 38 years in prison before he will be eligible for parole. Another man, Jamal Johnson, was convicted earlier in the week of conspiracy to commit burglary in the case.

Miller told the judge in court that pleading guilty was in his best interest. Defense attorney Al Hoch declined to comment afterward. has disabled the comments for this article.
