A Jay man with a history of drug, weapons and assault violations was shot and killed Thursday morning after he broke into a rural Delaware County home, authorities said Thursday.

Steven Lee Gooding, 27, of Jay, was shot several times about 1:30 a.m. Thursday in a home near the town of Eucha. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation was called in for assistance by Delaware County sheriff's deputies.

Jessica Brown, spokeswoman for the OSBI, said Gooding was not invited into the house and was shot when he entered.

“I can't go into further detail,” Brown said. “We are still investigating why the deceased went into the home.”

Brown said authorities haven't determined whether the shooting was a case of self-defense. The name of the resident who shot Gooding has not been released.

Gooding was released from prison in October after serving two years for an assault with a dangerous weapon, his fourth offense, and possession of a firearm, according to state Corrections Department records. has disabled the comments for this article.
