Many see fear at root of new law

More than once, Oklahoma's new immigration reform law was called evil during an interfaith prayer vigil Thursday at a southside Oklahoma City Catholic church.

"This is an unjust thing. This is hatred,” said Sergio Gallegos of Oklahoma City.

"We have to fight hatred, evil. We have to show people that we see it for what it is,” he said as about 350 people gathered outside Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 2706 S Shartel.

The vigil was organized by metro-area clergy who wanted to pray and show support for Hispanic illegal immigrants. They said they hoped to encourage the immigrants who are fearful of the impact of the immigration reform law known as House Bill 1804.

The Rev. Lance Schmitz, the Oklahoma City First Church of the Nazarene social justice minister who helped organize the gathering, noted that the vigil was being held on the law's implementation date.

"Brothers and sisters, we come together today on the strangest of days,” he said.

"We've entered into a new culture — a culture of fear and a culture of suspicion.
