Oklahoma City’s police and fire unions have organized against MAPS 3, forming a committee called "Not This MAPS.” Union officials claim the city needs to keep up staffing in the police and fire departments before moving on with MAPS 3. The city and union officials currently are in contract negotiations and city officials hope they can address concerns from police and firefighters before the vote.

"I dare anyone...anyone...to argue that the current MAPS investments haven't paid off big."-----OK..I'll take that little challenge.

All the money for MAPS for kids and what has it produced? 3 out of 4 kids in okaysee who don't know who the first president was. Graduation rates that have fallen even farther down the evolutionary scale than they were before(and before they were about at "pond scum" level.) Yeah, MAPS has been a REAL asset , hasn't it?

Now, how about the "other" MAPS initiatives? Let's see...Dayton left, GM left, Dell shifted about half their work force to Texas, the new outlet mall that's "on schedule" hasn't even broken ground yet, even though it was supposed to be completed this fall?? AAA has downsized their original estimate of mega numbers of jobs to well under 1000...all this in the okaysee metro area where MAPS was going to draw in businesses by the dozens...what oil company was it that moved their entire operation to Texas??

How about (I guess you could call it a MAPS initiative) the Ford center upgrade? How many Fortune 500 companies were going to move to okaysee because they now had a pro sports team and were now a "big league city"??

What's that? NO Fortune 500 companies? Huh.

Uh Kevin Okc the Police do swap out cars every shift, not all have take home cars.
Most of the police fleet runs for 20 hours with a 4 hour down time between 1st and 3rd shift. Also just think that if all the cars were tied up during shift changes the crime would run rampant cause every crook would know when there was no police patroling.

OKC has a chance to blossom while other cities are hiding in the trees. Smart people know that smart investments pay dividends. I dare anyone...anyone...to argue that the current MAPS investments haven't paid off big. You can argue all day long that your dog catcher didn't catch a stray dog four times last year on your street, or that the whole world is going broke while OKC cheats you out of a few pennies. The whole world isn't going broke, just a bunch of morons who get to post on this site for free.

It would be hard to find a successful initiative anywhere in the country as MAPS, still boggles my mind at the naysayers? Can anyone explain the 1%tax, is it on every man, woman and child or on what you spend while in OKC correct? So the "millionaires" who spend on lavish hotels and dinners etc would be fronting a disproportional share?? No?

Yes to MAPS. Anyone who can't see the difference in Oklahoma City since the first proposal passed is wearing blinders. Look at Bricktown, look at the ballpark or the Ford Center. I see a lot more people who look like me than the "millionaires" someone was complaining about. While we're not immune to the economy, we also have the opportunity to do several of these projects at lower cost right now, just like the improvements to the Ford Center and building the Thunder's practice facility.

Not the right time for this. Also, the proposed new arena is not needed at all, regardless of the timing.

Another post by me please...No to police pay raise..remember when they confiscated the sign from a working man that did not like abortion?? complete denial of free speach and nothing came of it! must be to many police officers and to much time..police firing there weapons at a local club?? completly irrisponsible!! Get the police force straightened up first, at this moment they would just abuse the money like they have with drug enforcement.

"...have the police swap out cars on shift changes..." But if they did that, they wouldn't be able to drive on our nickel to their part time jobs, where they typically earn more money than their full time jobs...

Kevin, Oklahoma City - Nov 9, 2009 at 11:10 am
No to maps three!! I have a better idea, let the profit from Down Town and brick town and tax at the motels start paying for our infra-structure up grades.Water main on my street has broken at least twice per year for last SIX YEARS!! (four times one year, and some times the street has to be rebuilt) How about decent water service first? instead of more play things
Marshall, Edmond - Nov 9, 2009 at 11:08 am
Paul many fire and police officers have second jobs or there wife works. So just because they live in a nice home does not mean they get "grossly overpaid". I don't think the men and women that put there lives on the line get paid enough.

Thank you Oklahoman for run the MAPS 3 opposition, it's a move in the right direction. It's too bad the city officials are like a cat in a sand box, on our police and firefighters. Take the car allowances away from City and pay the police and firefighters their due, you could also have the police swap out cars on shift changes, hire more police and firefighters (less cars more police and firefighters for the same money). One more thing when are we going to remember that we have other areas like Draper lake to build upon for the people not just Bricktown and or Downtown OKC????

25 Million for a Kayak Whitewater Area on the river and they don't even know where it will be? Make the river where all citizens can be on it and enjoy it not just the elite rowers. Right now saving one percent on all your purchases would help. VOTE NO!

just compare okc police and fire salaries with other cities. they are grossly overpaid. if you don't beleive it, like i said, check for yourself. or drive through rivendel and other high cost neighborhoods and check out all the police cars!

How much will it cost? OKC's own economist says around $1000 average for every man, woman and child. The math is easy. 777 million raised divided by 500,000 citizens = $1554 but about %30 is covered by out of towners so $1087 each. Family of for over $4000 dollars.

THE STATE MAY HAVE TO DRAIN THE RAINY DAY FUND JUST TO BALANCE THE BUDGET. THE CITY IS JUST AS BROKE AND THEY WANT US TO FUND MAPS FOR MILLIONAIRES. NO MORE NEW TAXES.... THE PEOPLE CAN'T AFFORD TO GIVE YOU A BIG STIMULUS CHECK FOR A CONVENTION CENTER WE'LL NEVER USE, A TRAIN WE WON'T RIDE, A HOBO FILLED PARK WE WON'T GO TO, OR A FAIRGROUNDS THAT WE ONLY GO TO 1 OR 2 DAYS A YEAR. YOUR RUNNING A GREAT CITY INTO FINANCIAL RUIN.
