March Madness: Big 12 off to sluggish start

by Berry Tramel Published: March 22, 2014

The Big 12, courtesy mostly of the Oklahoma schools, is off to a sluggish start in the NCAA Tournament. The Big 12 went 4-3 in the first round (sorry; pig-tail games in Dayton are not the first round).

Not bad, but not great. Here are the standings going into the regional quarterfinals:

1. SEC 4-0: Tennessee’s two victories were an unseen bounty.

2. American 3-1: Strong opening. Memphis, Connecticut and Louisville won. Only Cincinnati lost.

3. ACC 5-2: Mike Krzyzewski took on the Atlantic-10, saying the ACC needed more bids than the A-10. Turns out the Atlantic Sun should have been on Duke’s mind — the A-Sun’s Mercer upset the Blue Devils, keeping the ACC from an even better start.

4. Pac-12 4-2: Texas’ victory over Arizona State really helped the Big 12, else the Pac-12 would have been off to a super start.

5. Big 12 4-3: Key game for the Big 12 in the regional quarterfinals — Baylor vs. Creighton.

6. Big Ten 3-3: Strong games from Michigan, Michigan State and Wisconsin, but all came against overmatched competition.

7. Big East 2-2: I know it’s hard to remember who’s in the league anymore. So here goes. Creighton and Villanova were winners; Providence and Xavier were losers.

8. Mountain West 1-1: San Diego State won, New Mexico lost. Just like last year.

8. West Coast 1-1: Gonzaga won, BYU lost.

10. Atlanta-10 2-4: Almost a disastrous first round for the A-10. Dayton beat Ohio State and Saint Louis beat North Carolina State in overtime. Either could have lost.
