Marvel reports that Robert Downey Jr. has signed a two-picture agreement to star as Tony Stark/Iron Man in “Marvel’s The Avengers 2” and “Marvel’s The Avengers 3.”
Joss Whedon, who directed “Marvel’s The Avengers,” is on board for “Marvel’s The Avengers 2,” set to begin production in March 2014 and open in theaters May 1, 2015.
This appears to firm up Marvel’s production plans, while also indicating in the near future, the focus is on “Avengers” films as opposed to another solo “Iron Man” outing. Iron Man’s fellow Avengers, Thor and Captain America, both have sequels set for their characters. As of yet, no “Hulk” solo film appears to be in the offing, and no announcements have been made as far as the Hawkeye or Black Widow characters, though Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow will appear in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” now filming. Marvel also has “Ant-Man” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” in the works.
