Mary Hart Credits Oklahoma City for Her Start in Entertainment

Let's hear it for knobby knees!

"Entertainment Tonight's" Mary Hart, speaking at the American Women in Radio and Television Chapter luncheon Tuesday at Applewood's, said she was surprised at all the publicity about her pretty legs "because my father always said I had knobby knees."

Asked by a member of the audience if her legs were insured for $1 million as People magazine once reported, Hart laughed and said she wasn't sure if they were still insured or not.

She said the publicity about her legs started when she was moved from a stool to behind a desk. She said people started complaining because they couldn't see her legs, "which was the first time I realized anyone was paying attention to my legs."

So Hart's agent at the time, Jay Bernstein, decided if Betty Grable could insure her legs for $1 million he could insure each of Hart's legs for $1 million. And he did.

A former producer and co-host of a local talk/variety show "Dannysday" from 1976-79, Hart moved to Los Angeles to co-host first "PM Magazine" and then "The Regis Philbin Show" which was cancelled four months later.

Hart has been on "Entertainment Tonight" for nine years.

"I kept telling my agent "I can't keep doing this, my career will be dead,' " Hart said, "but the show keeps doing better all the time."
