Mashed In showcase a great venue for homebrew knowledge share

Admittedly, I was a little bit nervous at the beginning.

Here I am, a homebrewer only a little more than two years, and I’m setting up bottles of four of my brews to serve to a crowd of better than 300 people.

Add to that the fact that I’m setting up shop on the top floor of TapWerks Ale House surrounded by seasoned homebrewers — guys with a neon sign from their homebrew club and fancy keg-and-tap operations made to look like a prairie wagon.

That was the scene Sunday afternoon at TapWerks for the third annual Mashed In Homebrewers Showcase. It’s an event that is quickly become a must-attend for beer fans in the Oklahoma City area.

Needless to say, I felt a little out of my league at the outset. It was the first time I had offered up my beers for any gathering larger than 15 or 20 people. And so of course I worried that people may hate the beer.

Then the throng started to arrive:

Any time I had left to worry about how my beer would go over was quickly occupied by a steady onslaught of beer fans looking for samples. In fact, the rush was so steady off the bat, I feared I would run out of beer.

In the end, I brought enough for everyone to try, and had a great time chatting it up with the city’s homebrew fans. It was especially neat to be able to pass along what (still developing) homebrew knowledge I have to people who were curious about how the process works.

And I was really impressed with the number of people who asked specific questions, like “Did you add the coffee beans in the boil or secondary?” Clearly there are a lot of homebrewers out there who could appreciate the techniques and tricks used by all the brewers sharing their beer at Mashed In.

The final verdict? Mashed In is definitely a great event, and getting to share my beer with hundreds of beer fans was really something cool to do. Now I need to start scheming some new recipes for next year.
