Most consumers spend a third of their lives sleeping but they want shopping for a mattress to be quick, easy and convenient.

That's why Mathis Brothers Furniture has found success with its Sleep Studio concept and is bringing the mattress showrooms to communities in Oklahoma and California, said Kerry Tramel, president of Lady Americana, Mathis Brothers' mattress division. In the sleep shops, which are about 10,000 square feet, shoppers can find mattresses, pillows, protectors, sheets and adjustable bed bases.

Propelling the popularity of sleep shops is people's increasing interest in researching mattresses and finding one that is a good fit for their lifestyle, he said.

“Consumers are connecting the dots that their sleep is so important and having a mattress is a big part of that equation,” Tramel said.

Mathis Brothers, which has its main furniture store at 3434 W Reno, sees the Sleep Studios as a way to reach more customers as well as promote its own mattress lines: Lady Americana and Eco Comfort, which are manufactured in Oklahoma City.

Sleep Studios have opened in Norman, Edmond and Broken Arrow. Stores are under construction at The Outlet Shoppes at Oklahoma City and in Cathedral City, Calif., and Palm Desert, Calif.

The original Sleep Studio, adjacent to the Mathis Brothers showroom, has been open for about two years. Tramel said based on the success of that store, the company began expanding — making the new stores bigger and better.
