But never fear. Dan McCarney and Stoops have competed before.

The Florida defensive line coach spent 12 years as the head coach at Iowa State, where four times his Cyclones played Stoops’ Sooners.

Before every meeting — all won easily by OU — Stoops talked of how close he was to McCarney, an Iowa assistant coach during Stoops’ playing days as a Hawkeye.

And Monday, during the BCS title game media day at Dolphin Stadium, McCarney said the same.

"He’s an extremely close friend,” McCarney said. "Really proud of him.”

Stoops was proud of McCarney, too, for the job done at Iowa State, where McCarney took the Cyclones to five bowl games in a six-year span, 2000-05. Then Iowa State went 2-10 in 2006 and McCarney was fired from the previously downtrodden program.

McCarney spent 2007 as assistant head coach at South Florida, then was hired by Florida. He would like to be a head coach again, but Urban Meyer jokes that he hopes McCarney has to wait a little bit longer.

"Let me have him for a little while first,” said the Florida coach.

Meyer said the 55-year-old McCarney’s maturity has been instrumental in the Gators’ rebound from a 9-4 season in 2007.

"What he did at Iowa State, I think that’s similar to what Coach (Bill) Snyder did at Kansas State.”

Florida defensive end Jermaine Cunningham said he doesn’t know McCarney’s age, "but seems like he’s a young guy. He’s a high-intensity guy. You call tell he was a head coach.”

McCarney said if another head-coaching job comes along, "great. If not, I’ve got the best job in the country for an assistant. I wake up every day, can’t wait to get to the office. ”

Jo, it looks like my peps have already gotten to ya. No need to restate the obvious.

I'm just glad to hear of one more name in Stoop's fat Rolodex. The man can pull good assistants!

Jo, you're an idiot. You're actually blaming Castiglione? The best AD in the country? Besides, he has no power over the hiring or firing of assistants. That's the head coaches job. Pelini coached one year at OU, then moved to LSU for ONE year and now is a head coach. You were saying? McCarney went on to become an assistant head coach at USF, not a bad position. You know whose there? Another one of Stoops close friends in Jim Leavitt from his days at K State. He left that for Florida. You think OU should fire the line coach? Do you know his lines have been amoung the nation's most dominate, most feared almost every year since Stoops has been at OU? I'd be pretty hard pressed not to remember the Tommie Harris' or Dan Codys' of Stoops tenure. You're an idiot. Go spend you constructive time elsewhere.

Bob Stoops blamed for what? 6 Conference titles 12-1 and in the national title game? 2 Heisman trophy winners? Whats it gonna be? Sure, the bowl losses are dissappointing, but many coaches go through that. Tom Osbourne? You are talking about a Florida team that was 9-4 last season and also has one loss this year at home to an inferior team. EVERY team has weaknesses. Firing coaches is not a practice you should take lightly as a head coach. What kind of message does that send to potential coaches?

Jo in Edmond, you are an idiot and constantly make asinine comments regarding the Sooners. Don't you have something better to do with your time? Maybe hang out on the OSU news articles and write something constructive about your team or find articles on some newspaper relating to whatever team you do cheer for. Just for the love of the world please stop with your idiotic rantings.

Iowa State was extremely foolish to fire Dan McCarney. He was easily the most successful head football coach they've ever had! Back to the conference cellar you go Cyclones!

It is so easy to say that Stoops is to blame. He is the head coach, but he isn't on the field playing. Yes the other coaches call in the plays but that doesn't always work out. How many times this year did receivers not catch a pass, right to them. How may times did someone miss a tackle. Many times the players have memory lapses or just a moment of let down. When we lost Reynolds at Texas game, everyone it seems just had a let down, in that game how many dropped passed were they that if caught would have won the game. Let's get off of Stoops and other coaches backs. Take the Fiesta Bowl, should the Ohio State Coaches be fired, they have lost a lot of BCS bowls also, but in the end it was the players, it just didn't go their way. Go Sooners finish a a Champion!!!!

Do you ever wonder why, when these asst. and head coaches leave, like the Pellini's and
McCarney's, expeirenced, motivating, focused, etc. that Stoops knows, and go to other
schools and bring their "suspect" part of their team up to championship standards, why
they didn't come to OU and replace the "suspect" member of the staff, after being such
good buddies with Stoops. When McCarney left Iowa State, Stoops could have sent his
"little buddy" packing or back to a lesser position, moved his staff around and made
room for McCarney or Pellini, again, a Co. something like Mike and Brett. If Florida
shuts down OU and McCarney is motivated to do it, are the Sooner Fans and supporters
going to throw another $$$$mil. at Stoops or make him accountable. The fans are
going to have to do it, Costiglione doesn't have the "juavo's" to do it. When Switzer
was having some accountability problems in the early 80's the then OU Pres.W.Banowsky,
put Barry on a one year contract, long story short, worked, '84-88 OU was leading
the nation(top 5) in stats. and wins & BOWLS. Whats it going to be Sooner Fans?
