Don't get too fancy, Texas QB warns
McCoy has a tip for Bradford

Colt McCoy likens playing quarterback to teenage driving.

"Your freshman year, it's like when you start driving a car, you stop at every stoplight, put your blinker on, you never go above the speed limit,” the Texas quarterback said. "In the second year, you have your driver's license, it's a little tempting, you pass on the double yellow line, you do some crazy things.”

As a freshman, McCoy was spectacular, tossing 29 touchdowns to just seven interceptions.

But following a reckless sophomore year in which he threw 18 interceptions and took 24 sacks, both tying Big 12 highs, McCoy has advice for Oklahoma's sophomore quarterback, Sam Bradford.

"It's super easy in your second year to feel comfortable, to feel you know everything, to feel you don't have to do as much as you did your freshman year,” McCoy said. "But in reality, you have to do that much more. That's what I've learned.”

That's the challenge for Bradford, coming off a brilliant freshman season.

Bradford led the nation in passing efficiency and shattered McCoy's NCAA freshman record for touchdown passes with 36 while only throwing eight picks.

"After his game against us, I kind of jumped on his bandwagon,” McCoy said, referring to Bradford's three-touchdown performance against the Longhorns. "He was doing the same thing I was doing the year before, playing great.

"Nobody really knows how hard it is to come in as a freshman in front of an offensive line that's played for two years. And be able to call plays in the huddle and them listen and respect you. That's super challenging. He had a great year, and I'm sure he'll have another one this year.”

For Bradford, remaining cautious will be paramount, especially since he'll be surrounded by a veteran offensive line and a host of playmakers to take pressure off him.

Interceptions and sacks plagued McCoy, preventing him from building on his freshman season.

McCoy blames an overinflated sense of comfort and confidence as the cause for making poor and costly decisions throughout last season.

And what he says Bradford needs to avoid to produce a successful sophomore encore.

"Go back to the basics, understand everything, act like you just got your driver's license,” McCoy said. "That's what I've done.”

Janet. Good one.
Jay lighten the f**k up dude. Everyone uses "we" talking about their team. That slight is right down there with being a grammar and spelling cop on the internet. Are you Todd's parole officer? You seem to know an awful lot about him.
Roger, Keller - Jul 31, 2008 at 4:33 pm
I wouldn't take advice from any horn. Never.
Wesley, Texarkana - Jul 31, 2008 at 8:42 am
And Todd, it seems that you must be the one whose life is sad and pathetic if your sole source of joy is wrapping yourself in the athletic accomplishments of a university that you probably could not gain admittance to. If you were on these boards crowing about hte accomplishments of the university's chemical engineering department, or architecture program, then I might have an iota of respect for you.

Todd, I was just commenting on your use of "we" when bragging about how OU will beat UT. "You" have absolutely no effect on how the team plays or on hte outcome of the game. You are a bandwagon jumper. You ride along the wave of the team and university's success, waving your OU flag and screaming Boomer Sooner. But hte truth is that if you weren't there, or if you rooted for Texas, or if you never existed, it would not affect the outcome of the game at all. Just be careful when using pronouns.

What Jay, are you Bud Wilkinson's son? Since when did you have to graduate from OU and give birth on Lindsey to be a Sooner fan? And why do you act like you know anything about me anyway? You probably have a closet full of woman's clothes, maybe that explains why your not happy with your station in life! Don't remember anybody saying ask Jay before you call yourself a Sooner fan to make sure you meet the requirements! Loosen your panties up a bit! What is a wannabe fan? Is that some new term you made up while making out the requirement list for being a Sooner fan?

Any Texas fan with an IQ above room temperature (Jeff loses out here) will tell you OU is their #1 rival.

Todd, I asked and she said 2, as in inches...and asked that next time you work on your stamina. But seriously, Todd. You are not part of any "we" that might beat Texas on the football field. You are a wannabe fan, hoping to catch some reflected glory from a successful athletic program. I'll bet you have a whoe wardrobe of Sooner clothes.

Hey Jay, ask your wife what number I wear when at your house when yer at work. Jeff your full of Texas BS, Half my family lives there. Don't downplay the rivalry. Funny when you read any magazine, newspaper article, or interview about the coming season, no matter what year. The whole focus of the Texas article revolves around OU and the Ou articles are focused on OU. Deep down those Longhorns are bleeding crimson.

Wow, You OU fans need to get a life. McCoy is just being a good sport. That is something OU fans know nothing about. I will be so glad when Oklahoma gets a pro team( even if it is basketball ) Maybe we will stop hearing some of the whining from OU fans. By the way I grew up in Texas. We did not care or even think about OU until the week of the game. A & M was a lot more respected and talked about amongst Texas fans. Find a hobby other than Texas hate !!

Seriously, what does Sam's face have to do with his ability as a quarterback? Stick to the subject...good advice from McCoy. Looking forward to another great season and please don't put OU in the Fiesta Bowl...it's a curse.

Who cares who 'boos'? It's a game. Oh and if that's the first thing you've noticed that isn't 'classy' maybe you should look around you some more.

Booing is very unclassy. How can we get our fans to start applauding our opponent when they appear on the field? Most of the opposing teams are scared to death and just want to lose by less than 50! We need to applaud their bravery for showing up for a beating!
Janet, Oklahoma City - Jul 28, 2008 at 4:40 pm
So OU is the only school in the USA that boo's the opponents when they take the field? I don't think so.

Hats off to Scooter, OKC. I too have attended OU games for many, many years and would love to see our fans show class by giving the opponents a warm welcome when the y take the field. it is always better to take the high road. Makes our win all the sweeter and the occasional loss less bitter.

"McCoy is doing what most good QB's do. He is taking responsibility as a leader, even if it isnt all his fault."

but that is not the truth. so under your logic, in order to be a leader, one must lie?
