Format resembles NCAA basketball tournament for one day — one loss and you go home.

Baseball's wild-card playoff games on Friday will resemble the NCAA basketball tournament for one day: one loss and you go home.

TBS will carry both games of the new format with St. Louis at Atlanta at 4 p.m. and Baltimore at Texas at 7:30 p.m. Brian Anderson will call the NL game with analysts Ron Darling and Joe Simpson and reporter Tom Verducci. Ernie Johnson will call the AL game with analysts John Smoltz and Cal Ripken Jr. and reporter Craig Sager.

Smoltz said the games present added pressure for the managers.

“Nobody wants to really manage this type of game because there's going to be so much second guessing,” he said.

Matt Winer will host the 3:30 p.m. studio show with analysts Dennis Eckersley and David Wells.

TBS' coverage continues Saturday with division series matchups: Oakland at Detroit (Don Orsillo, Buck Martinez and Jaime Maggio) at 5 p.m. and Cincinnati at San Francisco (Anderson, Darling, Simpson and Verducci) at 8:30 p.m.

Short takes

— NBA TV's six-part original series “Open Court,” featuring a round-table discussion with a cast of NBA TV and TNT commentators, returns to the network at 10 p.m. Tuesday. The series once again will include studio host Ernie Johnson and former NBA standouts Charles Barkley, Reggie Miller, Steve Kerr, Shaquille O'Neal, Kenny Smith, Chris Webber and Steve Smith.
