According to the Health Department, rabies kills more than 50,000 people worldwide every year, but it is a preventable illness. So far this year, 32 cases of rabies have been reported in Oklahoma, primarily in skunks and cattle.

Oklahoma State University's student chapter of the American Veterinary Medicine Association's Run for Rabies will begin at 8 a.m. Oct. 11 and track around Boomer Lake in Stillwater.

Participants are encouraged to run with their dogs. Registration is $20 and will include a T-shirt and light breakfast. Prizes will be offered to the top runners and their dogs with proceeds donated to the nonprofit Alliance for Rabies Control.
