Meeting Billy Graham brings memories

Published: November 1, 2008

My first memory of Billy Graham was in the late '50s when he was having a revival at the state fairgrounds. I was a teenager, and my mother insisted that I go with her to see him. He has been a part of my family and my life ever since, through his telecasts, books and his column in the paper. To me, he is a beloved man and has done great deeds for mankind through his ministry and love of Jesus Christ.

I was 21 years old and had been married a month when I was asked to speak and give my testimony at the Southern Baptist Convention in Dallas.

I had grown up in a children's home funded by the stewardship division of the convention. I had been recognized the year before for speaking at the Texas Baptist Convention, so the invitation came about through this.

I soon learned that I would present after Gov. Jimmy Carter and before Cliff Barrows sang, and Dr. Billy Graham preached. I was absolutely elated.

It was the summer of 1973, and Dr. Graham was very kind and spoke to me after my presentation and again after the service/meeting. It was indeed a highlight as he had influenced my life as a child and youth.
