ATOKA — A 21 percent raise for elected officials in Atoka County could be in jeopardy due to an unscheduled meeting to discuss the issue.

Violating the Oklahoma Open Meeting Act is a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and a $500 fine.

Atoka County District Attorney Emily Redman said she was aware of the alleged violation by county commissioners, but it has not been investigated yet.

Redman could consider the case or disqualify herself because her job also is to offer legal advice to the commissioners.

Oklahoma State University professor and open government advocate Joey Senat said any violation of the meeting law should be prosecuted to discourage abuse by other elected officials.

"The lack of prosecution just encourages officials to ignore these laws,” Senat said.
