Memories include many favorites
DEAR MELBA: Recently I was thinking of the Anna Maude’s Apple Pie from years ago, then I opened the paper to see the true recipe in your column! I can’t tell you how excited I was to see that.
The Lyons (editor’s note: Cooper Lyon was owner of Anna Maude’s cafeteria) were my next-door neighbors when I was growing up. Cooper’s mother was precious and tiny, and Cooper would always come over to help her by burning the compost and picking the apples from trees in her yard for the pies. Little did I know then the treat that was growing right outside my bedroom window. We would climb in those trees, and I knew my parents loved the pie served with a slice of cheddar cheese on top.
It’s a very fond memory of mine, as you can tell.
I have to ask, as I know you have been asked a hundred times, do you have the original Putnam City School Cinnamon Roll recipe from the 1970s? I went to grade school there, and every Friday the cafeteria would serve tacos and cinnamon rolls. They were incredible. I truly do not think I have found one like it since. It had many layers and was very gooey. I would love to know if you have it. Thank you so much for what you do. It is so fun getting to bring back a part of our history that has made an impression in our lives.
