DEAR MELBA: My mom, Kathryn Jones, of Duncan, celebrated her 97th birthday on April 26 and you put a note about it in your column. The cards from your readers started coming immediately, and you can imagine what a ray of sunshine they are for her. She loves hearing from these great people. Just want to say thanks to everyone and say how nice it is of them to take the time to send cards. What great people we have in our state!

DEAR READERS: My sister, Mary Lee Colwell, of Wilburton, asked me to share some of my favorite recipes for a family cookbook she's writing. Caramel Brownies is one of my favorites, and because the dough is so thick and hard to spread, I've included directions for making it easier to spread.


1 box (18 ounces) German chocolate cake mix

2/3 cup evaporated milk

3/4 cup melted butter or margarine

1 package (14 ounces) caramels

1 package (12 ounces) milk chocolate chips

1 cup chopped pecans

Draw the size of a 9-by-13-inch pan on waxed paper. Oil the paper and set aside. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, with a spoon, mix cake mix, 1/3-cup of the milk and the melted butter. Press half of the mixture in the ungreased 9-by-13-inch pan.

Bake 7 minutes.
