Oklahoma's mental health rating jumps most

Oklahoma received a grade of B for its public mental health care system, improving the most in the country from the low score of D it got three years ago, according to a National Alliance on Mental Health report released Wednesday.

This is the second report the alliance has released to measure progress in transforming what a presidential commission on mental health called "a system in shambles.” The national average was a D, unchanged from 2006.

The report said if the state Legislature made mental health a funding priority, Oklahoma could become a model for comprehensive, recovery-oriented mental health care.

"The potential we have to be a leader is really the basis for our grade,” said the state’s commissioner of mental health, Terri White.

"We are keenly aware that too few people are successfully accessing the resources they need to successfully recover from mental and addictive disorders.”

Oklahoma is one of only six states that received a B. Others were Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts and New York.
