Six metro-area high schools received state Education Department grants to start robotics teams at their schools.

State officials granted $5,000 or $3,600 to ASTEC Charter, Capitol Hill, Edmond Memorial, Edmond Santa Fe, Noble and Southmoore high schools.

The funds will be used to start robotics teams at each school so they can enter the Oklahoma Regional FIRST Robotics Competition, which will take place in February.

For the next six weeks, the teams at each school will work together to build a remote-controlled robot from a common kit of parts.

The robots will then square off against each other at the competition.

In all, 24 schools received grants to enter the robotics competition.
