Court records show it's his second legal matter in the past five months; Finnie was charged in July with possessing a small amount of marijuana and entered a pretrial diversion program before the case was closed in late November.

Finnie appeared in 23 games over his first two seasons with the Hurricanes, who finished this season 7-5 and in a three-way tie atop the Atlantic Coast Conference's Coastal Division. Miami self-imposed a postseason ban for the second straight year because of an ongoing NCAA investigation into the athletic department's compliance practices.

Finnie started half of Miami's 12 games this season, making 30 tackles and one interception.

Under Florida law, second-degree felony charges can carry a maximum prison sentence of up to 15 years, and third-degree felonies can bring a sentence of up to five years.
