Longtime Miami Police Chief Gary Anderson was fired Wednesday, city officials said.

City Manager Huey Long said Anderson's termination is effective immediately, and the reason was “for the good of the service.”

Anderson declined to comment when contacted Wednesday evening.

An employee with the city's police department for 30 years, Anderson was suspended with pay in December after city officials received two official complaints from police officers who alleged a hostile work environment. A two-month investigation was launched during Anderson's suspension.

Long declined to discuss specifics of the investigation or the complaints on the advice of the city's attorney. The city will advertise nationally for a police chief to head up the 30-person department, he said.

Todd Hicks is serving as interim police chief.
