EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State University says about 6,000 people attended the dedication weekend for the Eli and Edythe Broad (BROHD) Art Museum, and the facility met its $40 million fundraising goal.

Museum officials said Tuesday that attendance doubled what they expected for the three-day event starting Friday.

They also announced that three previous donors added to their original gifts to cover the $1.2 million needed to reach the fundraising goal.

The 46,000-square-foot Broad museum designed by Zaha Hadid features a collection of 7,500 objects from the Greek and Roman periods through the Renaissance and on to Modern. A number of them were donated by Broad, a Los Angeles billionaire and Michigan State graduate.

The Broads have given $28 million for the museum.
