When you put together caring hearts, willing hands and a passion for sewing, you get quilters.

The Mid-Del Stitchin' Sisters Quilt Guild donated, created and delivered more than 60 quilts to Project Linus for the Superstorm Sandy hurricane victims. Project Linus provides “love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort” to children in need by giving handmade quilts and blankets created by volunteers.

Marilyn Harper, one of the guild members, organized one of the guild's regular “charity sewing” days into the “Sandy Quilt-In.” Some 20 members participated in cutting sewing, quilting, ironing and producing quilts.

But that's not all the charitable work this guild does. So far this year more than 200 quilts have been donated to local organizations, including Catholic Charities and Tinker Air Force Base Family Advocacy.

Marcia Johnson, with the Tinker Family Advocacy group, picked up 20 quilts at the last guild meeting.

“You can't imagine what these mean to new parents,” Johnson said. “Either mommy or daddy are in the active military, and they are away from their own families. These quilts are cherished. After all, what says ‘I love you' more than a homemade quilt?”

A name change may be in the future for the guild. There are now two men in the group, so “stitchin' sisters” might need to be changed to “stitchers.” But for now, the men don't seem to mind.

Stitchin' Sisters Quilt Guild meets the second Tuesday of the month at St. Matthew United Methodist Church, 300 N Air Depot in Midwest City. Visitors are welcome.
