MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) — Former Clemson and Memphis head coach Tommy West has joined Middle Tennessee's staff as a defensive line coach.

Middle Tennessee coach Rick Stockstill said Thursday in a release announcing the move that West "is exactly what I was looking for to coach our defensive line because of the amount of knowledge and expertise" he brings.

The 59-year-old West went 31-28 as Clemson's coach from 1993-98 and 49-61 as Memphis' coach from 2001-09. West was out of coaching in 2013 after working as defensive coordinator at UAB in 2011 and Southern Mississippi in 2012.

West and Stockstill worked together as Clemson assistants in 1989. Stockstill also worked as an assistant at Clemson in 1994-98 when West was the Tigers' head coach.
