MIDWEST CITY — Elks Lodge 1890, Midwest City’s chapter of The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, celebrated Flag Day with ceremonies and a community picnic.
In 1907, a group of Elks designated June 14 as Flag Day, and two years later made observance of the holiday mandatory for Elks nationwide. Elks Lodge 1890 honored that commitment Sunday at the lodge, where participants enjoyed a free picnic lunch.
A U.S. Navy Honor Guard presented the crowd with a flag folding demonstration and presided over flag retiring ceremonies. The Sooner Sensations singing group and members of the OK City Chorus provided patriotic music.
Special guests included state Sen. Cliff Aldridge, state Rep. Scott Inman and former state Sen. Randy Brogdon. Officers from the Oklahoma Elks Association also were present.
