MIDWEST CITY — The city of Midwest City will hold a grand opening for the new Regional Park Basketball Facility at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday. The public is invited to attend.
The two new outdoor courts, named Thunder and Rumble, are at 301 S Douglas, next to the Reno Swim and Slide.
Vaughn Sullivan, community services director, said the courts will be ready for the public to use right after the grand opening.
The courts feature a Green Star high-efficiency lighting system, special finishes for the concrete floors, a 10-foot-tall vinyl coated chain link fence and covered spectator benches.
Each court has the Oklahoma City Thunder logo in the center and Midwest City’s Spirit Flies High logo along the perimeter. One court floor is finished in the Thunder blue tone, with the other court floor finished in a beige tone.
“The Thunder organization was kind enough to allow the city to use their team logo in the center of our courts. We think that adds to the special look and feel of the courts, giving us a great Thunder presence in Midwest City,” Sullivan said.
Along with the ribbon cutting, the event will feature the OG&E Thunder Bolt display. Also included in the event will be a basketball contest with prizes.
Sullivan urges the public to attend and wear Thunder team shirts and hats.
“This is going to be a festive event for the entire family. Be sure and bring your basketballs to play with after the grand opening ceremony is completed,” he said.
The completion and grand opening of the basketball courts is the culmination of five years of discussion and planning.
“We have had a number of citizens who have played on the old makeshift courts for a number of years, and now we are very pleased that we can present them and the entire community a much nicer facility to enjoy,” Sullivan said.
The normal hours for the courts will be 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.
