TRIBAL officials are relieved that a U.S. Supreme Court ruling regarding the federal Indian Child Welfare Act was limited in scope. The court ruled the act didn’t allow a father to use his American Indian heritage to assert parental rights when the father never had physical or legal custody of the child, never supported the child and had actually waived parental rights.
