Senior investigator Mike Barnes has been named Edmond Fire Department's chief of fire prevention.

Barnes has been with the department 27 years: 15 years as a senior investigator and 12 years as a plan reviewer in the fire prevention office.

“The promotion of Maj. Barnes is an honor for me because I know his capabilities and level of expertise,” said Edmond's new fire chief, Jake Rhoades. “His passion for fire prevention is unsurpassed in this region of the country.

“I look forward to working with, and providing the support he needs as he develops the fire prevention division to the level that the city of Edmond expects and deserves,” Rhoades said.

“This position will have a profound, positive effect on our community for many years to come.”

Barnes, 54, fills the position left vacant with the termination of Tim Wheeler, who had been on paid administrative leave nearly a year.

Barnes will be over four other members of the fire prevention office.

“I am excited to have the opportunity to work with staff and our current programs to serve our community in a capacity that will continue to create Edmond as a fire-safe city,” Barnes said. “I am excited about the changes. It is going to be good.”
