OSU football notebook: Mike Gundy has high praise to Baylor QB Bryce Petty

Gundy said Petty is as accurate as he's seen in the Big 12 in four or five years, including QBs who have gone on to play in the NFL.

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy called Baylor's offense — which averages more than 61 points and nearly 685 yards per game — “the ultimate test” for his Cowboys.

And he had extremely high praise for the Bear that directs that high-powered attack: quarterback Bryce Petty.

“He's as accurate as I've seen in this league in four or five years, including the guys that have came through this league that are playing in the NFL right now,” Gundy said. “… When they catch it, they don't catch it and fall down. They catch it and run in the end zone.”

Petty, who has completed 65.2 percent of his passes for 2,992 yards, 24 touchdowns and just one interception, is the latest in a strong recent line of Baylor quarterbacks that featured Heisman winner Robert Griffin III and Nick Florence.

But Petty wasn't particularly touted coming out of Midlothian High School in Texas. He had committed to Tennessee before switching to Baylor after Lane Kiffin took over in Knoxville.

Another reason why you can't always put a ton of stock into recruiting rankings, Gundy said.

“He's a five-star guy now,” Gundy said. “I don't know what he was when he came out (of high school).”

GILBERT NABS BIG 12 WEEKLY HONOR

Cowboy cornerback Justin Gilbert was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the week Monday after tallying two interceptions against Texas, including one that was returned for a 43-yard touchdown.

Gilbert, who also recorded nine tackles and a pass breakup in the 38-13 win, now has six interceptions this season, which leads the Big 12 and is tied for fourth in the nation. This is the second consecutive week he's been honored by the Big 12, as he was named the conference's Special Teams Player of the Week after returning the opening kickoff against Kansas for a 100-yard touchdown.

At least one OSU player has earned a Player of the Week honor after every OSU win so far this season. The others are linebacker Caleb Lavey (Mississippi State), quarterback J.W. Walsh (Texas-San Antonio), punt returner Josh Stewart (Lamar and TCU), linebacker Shaun Lewis (Kansas State), kicker Ben Grogan (Kansas State), running back Desmond Roland (Iowa State) and quarterback Clint Chelf (Texas Tech).
