Mike Thompson endorses James Lankford in 5th District race
Mike Thompson endorses James Lankford in 5th District race. Kevin Calvey shrugs it off and says he'll get the votes of Thompson's supporters
WASHINGTON — Republican James Lankford got the endorsement of one of his former foes on Friday as the political outsider worked to expand his base for the Aug. 24 runoff against Kevin Calvey for Oklahoma City's House seat.
State Rep. Mike Thompson, who finished a distant third on Tuesday in the GOP primary despite overwhelming support from the local business community, said Lankford would bring a "desperately needed" perspective to Washington.
Just days ago, Thompson was one of the presumed targets of Lankford's campaign ads targeting the "status quo." Thompson was one of three current or former members of the state Legislature in the GOP primary. Calvey and state Rep. Shane Jett, R-Tecumseh, were the others.
In an interview, Lankford said he welcomed Thompson's support and that his oft-repeated line that the status quo in Washington couldn't be changed by sending the status quo to Washington "really wasn't aimed at anybody."
Calvey, an Oklahoma City attorney, said Friday that he wasn't concerned about Thompson's endorsement of Lankford in the 5
"I don't think endorsements mean much," Calvey said. "I'm quite confident that most of (Thompson's) supporters will support me now."
