Miley no match for Cain as Giants beat D'backs 6-0

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Wade Miley has been impressive most of the season. One bad outing won't change that, though it's little solace to the young left-hander after throwing a season-low four innings and losing to San Francisco for the second time in 11 days.

Matt Cain pitched seven innings, and had two hits and an RBI to lead the Giants to a 6-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday night.

Miley (16-11) will draw some consideration for NL Rookie of the Year honors. After all, he was picked for the All-Star Game and has the most wins in a rookie season since Justin Verlander had 17 in 2006.

"I was not very good at all from the start," Miley said. "I put us in a hole early and it's hard to win games when you're down 4-0 in the second or third inning."

Miguel Montero and Gerardo Parra had two hits apiece for Arizona, which only managed to get one runner past second base while losing for just the third time in 10 games.

"Cain shut us down," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said. "He could throw any pitch at any time to any place he wants. It was a tough game. We didn't swing the bats well at all."

Miley was attempting to become the first rookie in the NL to reach 17 wins since Cincinnati's Tom Browning in 1985. He didn't come close.

The Giants scored twice off Miley in the third on an infield hit by Sandoval and an RBI single from Buster Posey, who joined Walker Cooper (122 in 1947) and Dick Dietz (107, 1970) as the only other catchers in franchise history to reach 100 RBIs in a season.

"I'm frustrated in myself," Miley said. "I wasn't locating my fastball and missing down. When I made a good pitch, Posey got me last time and he got me again."

Brandon Belt added three hits, Pablo Sandoval singled twice and drove in two runs, and Marco Scutaro extended his career-best hitting streak to 14 games while helping Cain to his career-best 16th win.
