Just 2,019 home loans went through the Veterans Affairs in Oklahoma County last year, and that's too few considering the state's 330,000 or so veterans, according to a mortgage lender helping Realtors hone their skills

Fairway Independent Mortgage Corp.'s Stillwater office will present a training course in Oklahoma City for Realtors interested in earning its Certified Military Residential Specialist designation on Thursday. The event will be at Express Event Center, 8512 Northwest Expressway, and will feature retired U.S. Army Ranger and best-selling author Sean Parnell.

Registration will be at 8:15 a.m. Training will be from 9 a.m. to noon led by Louise Thaxton, who founded Madison, Wis.-based Fairway's Military Mortgage Specialist division, and Terri Murphy, a Chicago-area Realtor and communications consultant. Parnell, author of “Outlaw Platoon,” will speak at noon, then sign copies of his book presented at registration.

Reserve a spot by emailing EricZ@fairwaymc.com or calling (866) 628-5363.

Parnell will recount his story of leading a platoon into combat in the mountains of Afghanistan at the age of 24. Parnell and his men saw 16 months of close combat, with more than 80 percent wounded in action.

“Outlaw Platoon”

HarperCollins, the publisher, describes the book like this:

“In this vivid account of the U.S. Army's legendary 10th Mountain Division's heroic stand in the mountains of Afghanistan, Capt. Sean Parnell shares an action-packed and highly emotional true story of triumph, tragedy and the extraordinary bonds forged in battle. ... A searing and unforgettable story of friendship in battle, “Outlaw Platoon” brings to life ... those 16 months.”
