Though it’s a team without a head coach, Alfonzo McMillian feels it’s the team for him.

McMillian, the 6-foot, 185-pound athlete from Millwood, verbally committed to Sam Houston State on Friday.

“It looks like a cool place with a lot of stuff to do,” he said. “I’m planning to go down there soon for a visit. Recruiting has been pretty hard, but I feel like I made the right decision.”

Former Bearkats coach Willie Fritz was hired last week by Georgia Southern after leading Sam Houston State to the Division I FCS title game in 2011 and 2012.

McMillian says he doesn’t know yet which side of the ball he’ll be playing, but is prepared to step in either at receiver or defensive back. As a senior, McMillian was a first-team selection on The Oklahoman’s Little All-City team, finishing the year with 893 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns, as well as four interceptions on defense.

There are three other Oklahoma players on the Bearkats roster, though former Midwest City star Timothy Flanders completed his eligibility this past season. Offensive linemen Brandon DeWitt and Ryne Yost, both from Lawton, are on the roster as well.

McMillian also received offers from Washington State and North Texas.
