The author and director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center shared his views on health care reform and ways to boost health and happiness.
Mindset affects health, he said. Danger from fear, stress, anger and not believing in yourself mean people need to change their mindsets to improve their lives, he said.
He has experience with changing his mindset. As a child, he was failing in school, angry and hopeless. But when his mother decided to turn off the television and force her kids to read, his life changed.
He went from making zeros on tests to being disappointed when he scored less than 100 percent, an extreme he eventually realized was too stressful.
"It was a matter of having a different mindset,” Carson said.
Carson spoke about the failure of many politicians to make significant changes to an ailing health care system because they are often controlled by special interest groups and have become "power drunk.”
He advocates a "food-stamp” style health care policy for the uninsured and eliminating administration costs.
