A version of this column appears in Friday’s Weekend Life section of The Oklahoman.

Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton, Carrie Underwood, Thompson Square and Vince Gill among CMA Award nominees
The 47th Annual CMA Awards will air live from Nashville Wednesday on ABC, with Checotah native Carrie Underwood and fellow superstar Brad Paisley co-hosting the show for the sixth straight year.

Miranda Lambert and her trio Pistol Annies, Blake Shelton, Carrie Underwood, Thompson Square and Vince Gill are among the superstars with Oklahoma ties who will be competing for prizes during Wednesday’s 47th Annual CMA Awards.

The CMA Awards will air live from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn., from 7 to 10 p.m. Wednesday on the ABC Television Network. Checotah native Carrie Underwood and fellow superstar Brad Paisley will co-host the Country Music Association’s awards show for the sixth straight year.

Miranda Lambert, who lives in Tishomingo, is nominated for female vocalist of the year, single of the year as well as video of the year (directed by Trey Fanjoy) for her raucous hit “Mama’s Broken Heart.” The Texas native is the reigning CMA female vocalist of the year.

Her smash “Mama’s Broken Heart” also earned a song of the year nod for songwriters Brandy Clark, Shane McAnally and Kacey Musgraves. (Newcomer Musgraves received five other nominations, tying superstar Taylor Swift with a leading six nominations.)

Lambert’s trio Pistol Annies, which includes Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley, received their initial CMA Awards nominations in support of Lambert’s husband, Blake Shelton. Shelton and the Annies were nominated for music video of the year (directed by Fanjoy) and Ö musical event of the year for his chart-topper “Boys ‘Round Here.”

In addition, Shelton’s 2013 album “Based on a True Story …,” produced by fellow Oklahoma native Scott Hendricks, is nominated for album of the year, while the Tishomingo resident earned nods for male vocalist of the year as well as the top award, entertainer of the year. The Ada native is the reigning male vocalist and entertainer of the year.

Underwood garnered three nominations, for female vocalist of the year; album of the year for “Blown Away” (produced by Mark Bright); and video of the year for “Blown Away” (directed by Randee St. Nicholas).

Thompson Square, which consists of Miami, OK, native Keifer Thompson and his wife Shawna, is nominated for vocal duo of the year, a prize the couple won last year.

Norman-born and Oklahoma City-bred superstar Vince Gill and Kelly Clarkson are nominated for musical event of the year for their collaboration “Don’t Rush.”

As usual, the CMA Awards will feature a star-studded roster of performers, including Shelton, Underwood, Paisley, Musgraves, Lady Antebellum, The Band Perry, Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Florida Georgia Line, Little Big Town and Tim McGraw.

Special collaborative performances also are an expected part of the awards show, with this year’s lineup of team-ups including Lambert with Keith Urban, Swift with Gill and Alison Krauss, Hunter Hayes with Jason Mraz and Zac Brown Band with Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl.

Alan Jackson and George Strait will perform together in a tribute to the late, great George Jones, who died in April. In addition, newly inducted Country Music Hall of Fame member Kenny Rogers will receive the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award during the show, with Rascal Flatts (which includes Picher-bred guitarist Joe Don Rooney), Jennifer Nettles and Darius Rucker offering up tribute performances.
