Darbi Williams was crowned Miss Black Oklahoma on June 17 at Douglass High School.

Williams, who graduated from Oklahoma City University's Kramer School of Nursing this year with a bachelor's degree in nursing, competed against 11 contestants. She is the sixth OCU student to win the Miss Black Oklahoma crown, tying Langston University for having the most winners in the pageant.

During the pageant Williams' platform is “living protected.” Williams said living protected involves AIDS awareness, HIV testing and abstinence. During the talent portion of the pageant, Williams performed a piano arrangement.

Williams said she thanked God for the opportunity to compete and serve as Miss Black Oklahoma. She said her most memorable experience during the pageant was the week of professional speakers leading to the pageant show.

The opportunity substantiated her faith in the professional development offered through the pageant system and proved that they are not just “all glitz and glamour,” Williams said.

Williams enjoys reading, studying, being with friends and studying HIV issues and describes herself as an avid Oklahoma City Thunder fan. Her future plans include traveling to compete in the Miss International Pageant in August in Atlanta. She plans to return to OCU to pursue a master's degree in science and nursing.
