HOOVER, Ala. (AP) — Mississippi State benefited from a Georgia error in the bottom of the 10th inning to earn a 5-4 victory on Tuesday night in the Southeastern Conference tournament opening round.
Mississippi State (36-20) advances to face South Carolina on Wednesday in the tournament's second round, when the format changes to double elimination. Georgia (26-29-1) was eliminated.
The Bulldogs had runners on first and second with no outs in the 10th when Jake Vickerson put a sacrifice bunt attempt in play. Georgia threw the ball into right field on the play and Mississippi State's Gavin Collins scored.
Georgia trailed 4-2 going into the ninth inning but rallied to send the game to extra innings. Mississippi State is 7-0 in extra-inning games this season.
Lucas Laster pitched 8 1/3 innings for Mississippi State and gave up just three runs, but had to settle for a no-decision after Georgia's 9th inning rally.
