Mississippi State signs point guard

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — New Mississippi State basketball coach Rick Ray signed a much-needed point guard on Wednesday.

Jacoby Davis is Ray's first signee and the 6-foot-1 native of Charlotte, N.C., will likely be needed to play a sizable role after the Bulldogs' roster was decimated by attrition in the offseason. Davis spent the past season at Northwestern Military Academy in Delafield, Wis., where he averaged 21 points and five assists per game.

Ray said in a statement that Davis was a "true point guard that can set up his teammates, but he's also a good shooter."

Ray is trying to replace all five starters from last year's team, which finished with a 21-12 record and narrowly missed a bid to the NCAA tournament.
